History
The Homestead Grays and Pittsburgh Crawfords are two of black baseball’s most storied franchises. Cum Posey founded the Grays in 1912 while Gus Greenlee formed the Crawfords 19 years later. Starting out as independent teams, the Grays and Crawfords would go on to dominate the Negro National League, both winning a number of pennants and the Negro World Series. In 1937, the Crawfords lost many players who left to play in the Dominican Republic. Around the same time, the Grays adopted Washington, D.C. as their ‘home away from home.’ Pittsburgh disbanded in the mid-40s as Homestead followed suit in 1950.
